Harriet Laurie, of Outpost Productions, was commissioned by John Bloor (owner of Triumph Motorcycles) to revamp the range of Triumph bikes in regard to paint and other metal finishes. This became a fascinating three year project which took Harriet all over the world looking at motorbikes, the men who love them... and other toys for boys. She had to learn from paint chemists what was possible and find ways to push the boundaries to match with her understanding of what would turn a bike into an object of desire. Research had revealed that 75% of the buying decision for motorcycles was based on looks and in particular paint colour. She produced over thirty new paints – some involving entirely new muti-layered paint systems. The hallmark strontium yelllow catapaulted sales of the 595 daytona and the bike became a modern classic. Bike magazine ranked this one of the top ten bike paint jobs ever. (see Bike Magazine March 2008) Sales soared across the board and most of the Triumph motorcycles colours still in production today are a product of that incredibly fertile 3 year relaunch project. This experience, and the similar work for Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Trains makes Harriet a rare commodity – someone with a technical understanding of paint and other metal finishes, but also a proven track record in successfully bringing that to bear on high value international brands. |
